Food Security Programs

Primary Programs

Currently we offer three primary programs to support student food access: Open Market Hours, The Market’s Grocery Store Model, and Pop-Up Pantries. Each program is designed to support the various types of needs students may have, be it food type, length of support needed, and location.

To determine which program might best suite your current needs please contact the Dean of Students office.

Open Market Hours

Fall Semester Open Market Hours (August 27–December 17)

Location: 801 University City Blvd., Blacksburg, VA, 24060

Open Market Hours are open to ANY Virginia Tech student with no prior intake or registration requirements. Students can simply walk in, swipe their Hokie Passport, and select from a variety of non-perishable items. We do not have limits on most items offered. Please bring your own bag when shopping in the space.

  • Tuesdays: 9:30–11:30 a.m.
  • Thursdays: 4:30–7 p.m.
  • Fridays: 9–11:30 a.m.

Note: Please bring your own bag when visiting The Market.

Grocery Store Model

The Grocery Store Model is The Market of Virginia Tech’s landmark model. Students enrolled in this program can shop for a variety of produce, dairy, dairy substitutes, protein, and non-perishable items each week. This program is limited in capacity due to financial and space limitations – we can only currently enroll 115 students for 30-weeks of support. If you are a student interested in enrolling in this program, please complete the intake form.

Due to our current waitlist size, it is unlikely that those who join the waitlist will receive support within 6 months of completing the form. Please refer to Open Market Hours (no intake form necessary), other food access resources in the NRV, and the Dean of Students office for additional support.

Pop Up Pantries

Pop-Up Pantries are temporary non-perishable pantries located on-campus to support students during times of higher need. We currently facilitate one pop-up per semester during the last 2-4 weeks of classes/exams.
